Sports Courts Resurfacing for Chesterfield High School

Customer requirements

Chesterfield High School required the refurbishment of their outdoor sports courts, which had become unsafe and unfit for use. Loose aggregates and uneven surfaces meant that pupils could no longer access the area safely during PE, break times or for extracurricular sports. The customer required tarmac overlay on 3869m2 tennis courts at the High School.

The school appointed MAC Groundwork Contractors Ltd to deliver the works in partnership with Bradleys Surfacing Systems due to our extensive experience delivering specialist surfacing and drainage solutions in educational environments.

Carrying out the work

Following a detailed site survey, it was determined that 6 of the school’s 8 courts needed full resurfacing. The remaining 2 courts were still structurally sound and required only light restoration. We ensured the work was carried out with minimal disruption to the school day.

All courts were restored to a high-performance standard and made ready for multi-sport use.

We carried out works on 3 separate areas on tennis courts. Firstly, preparation works were required, planning out and breaking out existing tarmac, piercing holes in existing courts to allow for drainage and tack coat existing surface in preparation for the surface course. We then laid the 6mm Courtmaster over the existing surface.

Groundworks

To prepare the surface and ensure long-term drainage performance:

The base layer was punctured to allow water to drain into the sub-base.

Court edges were planned off and prepared to.

Surfacing

6 courts were resurfaced using a laser-guided paver to install a new layer of textured porous macadam, ensuring precision levels and long-term performance.

Once the macadam had fully oxidised, the courts were colour coated using vibrant, anti-slip spray coatings and line marked for multiple sports including netball, basketball, football and tennis to promote inclusive use across the school.

The remaining 2 courts were jet-washed, given minor patch repairs, and colour coated to provide a clean and cost-effective upgrade.

The final result

The outdoor space has been completely transformed. What was once unsafe and underused is now a standout feature of the school grounds supporting PE lessons, lunchtime activities and after-school sports.

Staff and pupils alike have praised the visual impact and surface quality. The new facilities have raised the bar for school sports courts in the local area.
