FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What's involved in building a skate park, pump track or BMX track?

A full build covers site survey and ground investigation, excavation and drainage, reinforced concrete or tarmac base construction, ramp and feature installation, surface finishing, and fencing, seating and lighting where required. We deliver turnkey installations as SAPCA Approved Principal Contractors, so clients have one experienced team managing the project from groundworks through to the finished facility.

What's the difference between a pump track and a BMX track?

Pump tracks are continuous loop tracks designed for flow riding without pedalling, making them suitable for bikes, scooters and skateboards across a wide range of ages and abilities. BMX tracks are designed specifically for racing, featuring jumps, berms and straights laid out in a circuit. Pump tracks tend to appeal to a broader community audience, while BMX tracks serve more specific user groups with a focus on competitive riding. We help clients choose the right facility based on their target users, available space and budget.

What materials are used for skate park construction?

There are two main options. Concrete is the most durable and delivers the smoothest riding surface, making it the preferred choice for permanent facilities and more advanced riders. Steel and timber ramps are modular, more cost-effective and easier to reconfigure over time, which suits community settings where flexibility is a priority. We help clients select the right materials based on budget, user group and long-term maintenance capacity.

Do skate parks, pump tracks and BMX tracks need planning permission?

In most cases, yes, particularly where floodlighting is installed, the facility is in a public space or there’s a change of land use. Planning requirements vary depending on the site, location and scale of the project. We provide planning guidance, technical drawings and supporting information to assist with applications, and we’re happy to advise on requirements at any stage of the project.

How long does it take to build a skate park, pump track or BMX track?

Most new projects are completed within eight to 12 weeks, subject to weather, design complexity and site conditions. Resurfacing an existing BMX track can typically be completed within two weeks. We’ll agree a clear programme with you at the outset so you know what to expect at each stage.
