Types of Multi-Use Games Areas
MUGAs can facilitate a number of different sports including football, basketball, tennis, hockey, netball and athletics.
The ability to combine a number of sports in one area makes MUGAs the perfect solution for sites that have limited space and want to facilitate a variety of activities.
The type of MUGA constructed can vary depending on which sports facilities are combined.
There are three main surfaces commonly used for MUGAs: painted macadam, polymeric rubber and needle-punch carpet. The right choice depends on the sports to be played, intensity of use and maintenance requirement
Choosing the Right MUGA
MUGAs provide a practical and cost-effective way to promote sports and physical activity in communities, schools, and leisure centres.
By choosing the right design, materials, and maintenance plan, these facilities can serve multiple generations and encourage active lifestyles.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA)?
A Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) is a purpose-built outdoor sports facility designed to accommodate several different activities on a single surface. From football and basketball to netball, tennis and hockey, a MUGA is a practical, all-weather solution for schools, community centres, leisure facilities and local authorities where space and budgets need to work hard. Rather than maintaining separate pitches and courts, one well-designed MUGA serves multiple uses throughout the day and year.
What surfaces are available for a MUGA?
There are three main surface options, each suited to different sports, usage levels and budgets. Painted macadam is the most economical choice, extremely durable and well suited to basketball, netball and general recreational use. Polymeric rubber provides better shock absorption and grip, making it a strong option for multi-sport PE and higher intensity use. Needle-punch carpet is a resilient all-weather surface popular in schools and community settings, particularly where football training and high footfall are priorities. We help clients choose the right surface based on how the facility will actually be used.
What's involved in MUGA construction?
A full MUGA build covers groundworks and excavation, drainage and sub-base installation, base construction, playing surface, multi-sport line marking, perimeter fencing and access gates. Floodlighting can also be included where needed. We manage the complete build as SAPCA Approved Principal Contractors for Multi-Use Games Areas, so clients have one experienced team overseeing the project from start to finish.
Do MUGAs require planning permission?
Not always, but it depends on the site, size and whether floodlighting is included. Schools often benefit from permitted development rights, which means sports facilities can typically be built without full planning permission, provided they meet certain criteria around size, height and boundary distances. Floodlighting and sites near residential properties are more likely to need consent. We recommend engaging with your local planning authority early, and we can provide drawings and specifications to support any application required.
Can an existing tennis court be converted into a MUGA?
Yes, and it’s a cost-effective route that many clients take. Existing tennis court bases can often be reused, which reduces excavation and groundworks costs significantly. A site assessment is needed to check the condition of the existing base and drainage before we can confirm what’s involved. If you’ve got an underused court, it’s well worth exploring what a conversion could look like for your site.
