Groundworks and Surfacing Project

BMX Track Resurfacing, Oakley Park Shepshed

Client: Shepshed Parish Council
Start: January 2026
Resurfacing the BMX track at Oakley Park, Shepshed for a safer, smoother and more durable facility for the local community.

About the project

MAC Groundworks was appointed by Shepshed Town Council to resurface the BMX track at Oakley Park due to it becoming worn and uneven over time.

Works included levelling and regrading the track, forming and compacting jumps and berms, installing a new linking path, and ensuring proper drainage to maintain the track’s condition in all weather.

“The project involved enhancing the overall layout and usability of the track, including reshaping and rebuilding key sections to improve flow, safety, and rider experience. The result is a more durable, accessible, and enjoyable BMX facility for the local community.”

Site Preparation and Groundworks

Works began with preparation of the existing track to create a suitable base for surfacing. This included:

  • Application of weed treatment across the full track area
  • Regulation and levelling of the existing stone surface
  • Compaction to achieve consistent levels throughout
  • Installation of Type 1 stone in low areas to correct dips and improve formation
  • Installation of stone edgings to define the pathways
  • Construction of a new linking path from the finish area back to the start, including excavation, installation of geotextile membrane and sub-base

Specialist Surfacing Works

The resurfacing of the BMX track required a specialist approach due to its shape and layout. The works were completed over an eight-day programme, using hand-laying techniques to ensure accuracy. Particular care was required on the berms and high corners, where achieving a smooth finish is critical for rider safety and performance. This was achieved through:

  • Controlled hand laying of asphalt
  • Roller compaction on standard sections
  • Careful use of wacker plates on berms to maintain consistency across the track profile

Line marking was applied to define the start and finish points, completing the track.

    Finished Result

“The end result has exceeded expectations and made a real positive impact on the park. The upgraded track is noticeably safer, with a smoother and more consistent surface that performs well in different weather conditions.
The improved layout has made the facility more accessible and enjoyable for a wider range of users, from beginners to more experienced riders.”
