About the project
MAC Groundworks was appointed by Crown Highways to deliver a full groundworks and surfacing package at Kids’ Village in Staffordshire.
This project was the first phase in the development of Kids’ Village — the UK’s first holiday village for children with critical illnesses and their families, created to provide comfort, respite and support for those who need it most.
The scope included constructing all access roads across the site, creating essential routes to lodges and shared facilities. This early infrastructure work was critical to enabling future phases of construction to proceed efficiently and safely.
Crown Highways placed strong emphasis on precision, efficiency and sustainability. Minimising waste and reusing site-won materials were key priorities, alongside achieving the highest standards of safety and workmanship within a tight delivery window.

Carrying out the work
The project began with a site assessment to understand ground conditions and ensure efficient planning. The works were then delivered by our groundworks and surfacing teams, combining expertise and quality control from start to finish.
Groundworks and Site Preparation
The groundworks phase included full excavation and site preparation to establish a strong, stable base for the development.
Our team carried out all earthmoving works with precision, achieving the correct levels through accurate cut and fill and reusing suitable materials wherever possible.
Specialist membranes were installed to improve ground stability and drainage before engineered stone layers were placed and compacted to create a durable sub-base.
Every stage was delivered under strict quality and safety controls, providing a solid, long-lasting foundation for the finished surfacing works on this part of the site.
Civils and Drainage
The civils works included drainage, foundations and kerbing, to complete the road and access infrastructure across the site. Foundations were excavated and constructed in line with engineering specifications to provide strength and stability.
Kerbing works included 8 linear metres of 10×5 entrance kerbs and 1,160 linear metres of BN3 kerbs to define the main access roads, footpaths and landscaped edges, improving both safety and layout. A 20/40mm clean stone filter strip was installed to manage surface water drainage and support long-term performance of the sub-base.
Around 696m³ of excavated topsoil was reused to grade and backfill up to kerb edges, reducing waste and supporting sustainable working practices. All works were completed to a high standard of quality and safety, delivering a durable civils package that provides lasting value for the development.
Asphalt Surfacing
A 100mm AC20 dense binder course was machine-laid across 2,320m², followed by thorough surface preparation including mechanical sweeping and application of a hot tack coat to ensure strong adhesion.
The final layer consisted of 10mm Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) laid to a depth of 40mm, providing a smooth, long-lasting surface with excellent skid resistance.
All works were delivered under strict quality control, achieving a consistent finish that meets both performance and visual standards.
The final result
The project was completed on time and to a high standard, meeting all of Crown Highways requirements. The Kids’ Village team were delighted with the results, describing the new road as “the road to everything”. This is a crucial step in transforming the site from open ground into a safe, functional and welcoming environment.
